Today Calinka turn 18 years. Unbelievable that it is that many years since we first meet...

The week has been very calm so far  - my husband need to work on the boat. If he isn't read until next weekend the boat will stay on land for all the season. Therefore my visits in the stable is very short right now so he can go and work on the boat every evening. But, instead I brought all winter rugs home and startedt to wash.

She is rather normal...

All neighbors probably know that I am washing...

Men tills dess..

Horsebreeding – an utopia?
To sum up my discussions about different breeding goals I am going to be more specific about what I want to breed and how I wish my herd was like.

·         Conformation wise I don’t want any horses in my heard that don’t live up to my basic requirement. But, as no-one is perfect there is always going to be compromises and acceptance of things that I don’t like. But, it is not good if both mare and stallion carries the same “negative” traits.
I want small, pony like horses that just reaches the height according to the breed standard and big, massive one that nearly pass it. All riders don’t come in the same size and both seems to be common within the breed. The same with “bulkiness”, some seems to be slender and refined while others are big and chunky – and I want both of them.

·         Gait Earlier I didn’t want horses that had easier to pace than to trot. Now days I have started to change my believes a little and wouldn’t have a problem with a few individuals that finds pace easier than trot. According to recent studies the gait might be lost if breeding to many trotty horses. Therefore a pace one every now and then might be a good choice. While looking for a horse to purchase it is not always easy to se what kind of canter the horse has as many don’t use that gait and even fewer trot their horses. I evaluate both those gaits. I think that in Sweden people are going to like to bring their Rockys to dressage tests and even if the gait of the Rocky isn’t going to beat gaits of horses breed for dressage test for generations. But, the still need to be able to canter and trot ok to participate. In USA the height of the legs lift seems to be discussed a lot and that gives different show disciplines. I would like horses from all those disciplines, the ones with a really low one and ones with a lot of lift, maybe even higher than RMHA permit at shows. As it naturally seems to be horses within the breed that do that.
·         Disposition The typical Rocky disposition is a must, but there is still differences. Some horses are more showy and forward going, some are calmer.

·         Pedigree wise I want as many different lines as possible.

·         Color wise I would love to have at least one individual with all different color genes that exists within the breed. That doesn’t mean that I need one palomino, one perlino, one silver smokey black, one buckskin etcetera, but one horse with the crème gene – then I have the potential to create the other and don’t lose that traits.

And why those choices? I believe that as, so far, the only breeder in Scandinavia I need to be able to show the variation within the breed. Why would it be that everyone else likes the same things as me best? Of course I need to be able to stand for what I breed and therefore I have my own conformation qualifications for example. How forward going, if it is 148 cm or 162 cm in height or coat color doesn’t matter a lot to me on the other hand. I also believe that if the breed should have a chance outside USA a genetic diversion is needed so new imports isn’t needed all the time. I guess it is an utopia, but this is how I have planned my heard so far and am going to continue to plan it if I get the chance to enhance it. Maybe later on I get attached to some of the lines or traits and dislikes others to much and make a more narrow choice. Or that people only want some of the types. But until then…

Solig söndag

Några bilder från dagen. /Some pictures from today.

We got more hay as the horses seems to have decided that the grass isn't enough. To get away with the car didn't seem to bother Tea and Bunny much.

Pepper found a nice spot to scratch his head...

There is always something to do

I had planned differently, but as the fence was broken I had to start with that. The there was some things that needed to be painted, some food to prepare and some other things... Luckily I got up early so I had time.

Calinka did a good long rein session - she got in a better frame and I think that she got a little bit softer and that she can be worked in shape. I brought Pepper along as I checked the fence at a pasture that the mares might use during the jousting games in some weeks. Then we played a bit  and cleaned up the arena. Tea got to try a halter and wasn't impressed. Even if it was a foal halter it was slightly to big.

Mika joined me but stayed in the tack room, feeling sorry for herself. According to be she could have walked around and checked things in the pasture...

The grass is growing and last week it seemed as the horses only wanted to graze, but now the only want hay. It is not easy to calculate how much more they are going to eat , should I buy one or two more rolls?
When in heat, Bunny thinks Pepper is rather nice...

Bunny has gotten into foal heat ; I started to feel there might be something a couple of days ago, but today there was no questions ...
I think his eyes say:"She is MY girl".

Finally some time !
A meeting that once more had been postponed so I got to the stable really early. Really enjoyed that. I patted the horses a bit and caught Pepper. Maria should have long reined him Tuesday, but then he didn’t want to be caught. Probably because it was very windy. Or there was some kind of joke as neither Percy not Calinka wanted to be caught either when Maria planned to switch horse. (And usually none of them is hard to catch). Pepper was very calm – I think he enjoys to have company in the pasture. Just before I was going to long rein him Sylvia (with the other Rockies) and friends of hers showed up to admire Tea. Earlier in the afternoon Nanette and Tora came by, by the same reason and the day before Maggan and Malin visited her. Fun!

Pepper worked nicely, but was low on energy. Calinka really wanted my attention so I brought her in, groomed her more than usual and gave her a massage. The she got long reined as well and was a bit stiff. She worked perfectly in many ways but didn’t give the last to get in a good frame. It seems to be the left hindleg that troubles her – she slipped some times while cantering  on the left side and had trouble to get that leg under her in the same situation. Time will tell if some work helps her or if she needs the chiropractor. Maria got a bit of the same feeling when she lounged Calinka yesterday.

I also got time to clean in the pasture a bit and to sit down and cuddle with Tea. Nice! Such a difference compared to Monday when time only escaped and my body didn’t want to do anything. It also warmed my heart to see how much both Pepper and Calinka wanted my attention.

And Tea has got her own insurance. During the first 30 days (at my insurance company) she get some veterinary care from Bunny's insurance but I thought it was time to give her an insurance, that could be done as soon as she got two days old.

I guess that Bunny don't want to be less special than the others color wise. Those light patches around her head came during the winter.

Namnet Antea

Antea - the name
Antea got her name as it is supposed to mean "the first" in Latin. Searching the internet reviled a little bit more:

Antea (or Anteia or Stheneboea or Stenebea) was according to Greek mythology King Iobates' daughter. She is mentioned in the Iliad and some other works. There seems to be some differences in the myths, but they seem to include the following:

Antea tried to seduce the hero Bellerophon though she was married to the king of Argos, Proetus. In her marriage with Proteus she had one son and two or three daughters:  Megapente, Lisippa, Infianassa and eventually Ifinoe.  As she didn't succeed in her seduction of Bellerophone  she told her husband that he Bellerophone had raped her. Proteus sent Bellerophone to Iobates with a letter that begged Iobates to kill Bellerophone. As Ioboates didn't want to treat a guest in that way he gave Bellerophone a mission instead. When Bellerophone succeeded he also saved his life. Iobates also thanked him by letting him marry Anteas sister Philone. Later Antea seemed to have payed with her life for her accusations of Bellerophone.

Horse breeing - the individual
If you know what you want, what you are looking for, then you "only" have to find the right individuals. But how do you do that? Of course breed and age matters in how easy it might be to find good information.
What lies behind an old injury - problem with soundness, unlucky or a owner that haven't cared? Why doesn't the hose have the temper that you are looking for. Is it not happy, is in pain or has it owner managed to train the horse well so it only shows subtle signs of a much worse temper? Legs that aren't perfectly correct - could they have been corrected early if the breeder had cared, or are they more seriously and might pass by to the offspring or hinder the individuals performance?

Those and many more questions comes up and with a young horse it becomes both easier and harder. Harder as soundness, own merits and longevity can't be seen, even if you can look at close relatives. Easier as the horse might not have been very influenced by people and therefore might show its "true character".

I have also thought that show results, what do they show me? After watching show in the US, I do not always prefer the winner. Those individuals do not always have the traits that I am looking for, my ideals are a little different. On the other hand, they always tells something; they show that the horse is trainable and withstand the stress of the show. It can show a multi-talent if the horse has participated in many different classes with a good result. It might indicate a type of gait or talent for something and what the owner and trainer likes and knows about. But, if I am looking for stamina I might better look for endurance ride results and so forth. Still, if the horse lacks results from endurance it might not be because it don't have stamina - maybe the owner had no interest in that discipline. Therefore results aren't the most important thing, but each needs to be evaluated accordingly.
With all those I don’t haven’t o be easier to find individuals that fit and no one is perfect. Plus and minus has to be evaluated against each other. To be able to search for what is missing in the individuasl in the breeding program and what could be accepted even if not perfect. And what the foal inherits is not always what the parent have; it might be grandma’s disposition and grandpa’s legs.

Bildbomb Tea

Today Sandra and I took a short trail ride with Calinka and Percy in the wonderful weather. Sandra continued with some dressage when we got back home while I let the others back in the pastures and started to muck out the pastures after the winter.

Lördag eftermiddag - tömkörning Pepper

Today it was easy to get Bunny and Tea indoors.

The afternoon my father worked with the fence while I cared for the horses and Sandra took Calinka for a trail ride. And Pepper got long reined.

Not perfectly sharp, but the only picture where he gaits - and he actually gaited a lot. But this was the only picture that showed it OK.
Sandra is trying to long rein - it takes some time to get the idea.
Calinka enjoyed not wearing a rug.
Percy wanted to get indoors and pawed the ground.
